Title: Mechanical Systems Engineer
Reports to: Regional Consultant Manager
SBU: Engineering
Location: DCH Shengzhen
Description:
The DuPont Mechanical Systems Design and Development organization; develops me
chanically oriented new products/processes, upgrades & troubleshoots existing
equipment, and implements capital projects. We are noted for our understandin
g of manufacturing processes, concept development, machine design & analysis,
fabrication, prototyping, testing, and project implementation capabilities.
An engineer in the Mechanical Systems Design and Development group will provid
e mechanical engineering solutions for a range of DuPont custom and commercial
manufacturing equipment. The engineer shall be able to provide fast accurate
analyses and recommendations for small acute issues on location, as well as l
arge development of sophisticated machines. The engineer will be expected to
assume leadership and accountability for the success of the programs from prob
lem identification to solution start-up. The engineer will be expected to be
on location for all start-up activity. Travel up to 40% can be required.
Job Responsibilities:
1.Work with plant sites, vendors and construction to plan and execute safe ins
tallation and commissioning of equipment – functionally accountable for final
systems acceptance testing.
2.Effectively manage multiple programs across multiple business units with a f
ocus on meeting commitments (cost and timing) while maintaining high quality w
ork.
3.Lead engineering team(s) to develop conceptual design and perform preliminar
y engineering to serve as the basis for program evaluation.
4.Possess analytical capabilities including proficiency in statics, dynamics,
and mechanics of materials calculations. Be able to specify and interpret fin
ite element analyses and perform other required machine design calculations.
5.Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and practical feasibility of designs and
specifications as well as adherence to applicable mechanical and safety standa
rds.
6.Work with Technical, R&D, Maintenance, and Operations to develop program bas
ic data.
7.Prepare and audit scopes of work, estimates, schedules, equipment specificat
ions and functional descriptions in mechanical terms.
8.Communicate project objectives and tasks clearly, concisely and effectively,
both orally and in writing, to other people such as plant personnel, vendors,
team members and leaders.
In addition, the individual will be responsible for:
1.Evaluating vendor proposals and designs, and exercising effective judgment a
round functionality, cost and timing.
2.Developing first-of-a-kind custom equipment beginning with conceptualizing n
ew equipment.
3.Planning and conducting experiments and coordinating the collection and anal
ysis of data to help in defining scope of programs and identifying problems wi
th possible solutions.
4.Working with DuPont Sourcing to ensure effective purchasing plans.
5.Managing and monitoring equipment being provided by vendors for compliance t
o specifications
Qualification Requirements:
1.MS or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering. Preference is for a PhD.
2.Strong interest and background in machine design and equipment fabrication.
3.Demonstrated knowledge of commercial fabricating techniques, machining pract
ices, design capabilities, inspection processes, fastening systems, machine dy
namics, system controls, surface finishes, safety, and internal and external s
upport systems.
4.Demonstrated ability to visualize 3-dimensional parts and assemblies from 2-
dimensional drawings.
5.Demonstrated knowledge of, or aptitude for learning, computer aided solid mo
deling machine design tools (Preferable in ProEngineer).
6.Ability to learn Finite Element Analysis tools such as Mechanica™ to c
onduct stress analyses.
7.Ability to keep a systems-level view of electromechanical equipment and the
interactions of mechanical, electrical and controls disciplines.
8.Ability to work independently and to be self-motivated.
9.Demonstrated ability to work as a team member to develop equipment concepts
that meet business needs.
The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work effect
ively in a team environment with people of all job levels who are geographical
ly and culturally diverse. The ability to “sell” the value of his/her skill
s to potential customers is a requirement. Good written and oral communication
skills and the ability to use computer tools are essential. The ability to s
elf-motivate, work independently, manage multiple jobs simultaneously, organiz
e work and set priorities is also required.
Additional Information
Travel is required 30-40%, 2 to 3 days duration, often on short notice. Overs
eas travel will also be required. It is anticipated that the successful candi
date will be located at a regional office in Shenzhen, China after a 3 month o
rientation in Shanghai, China. The candidate will serve DuPont facilities in C
hina, Taiwan, Japan and Korea and possibly ASEAN region. The initial training
will be a 6 to 9 month period in the US for orientation and familiarization wi
th US based consulting personnel.
